The varsity girls soccer team took on Oakmont Wednesday, Sept. 11. Playing in blazing heat on a Wednesday afternoon was not an easy task for the varsity girls. They played through the heat and delivered a fair game. The first half provided multiple scoring opportunities, but none made it past the goalie, or they were out of bounds.

Sophomore Sophia Turchetta had great shots, but they were a little too high and wide, and she skyed three potential goals in the course of the game.
Both goalies were successful at shutting down their opponent’s shots during the first half. Meghanne Fitzsimmons made two amazing diving attempts to stop any sort of momentum buildup by Oakmont. Unfortunately, the same can be said for Oakmont’s own goalkeeper Kayla Rocheleau, who got lucky as Bromfield missed shot after shot in the first half.
Keeping their cool
Although the play was intense, the Bromfield players kept their cool despite the heat. The Oakmont coach, however, did not, arguing with both referees throughout the match and disagreeing with their calls. The Oakmont coach would continue to yell throughout the game but remain at the bench, keeping his players in check. After a tight defensive first half, Bromfield finally broke the scoreless scorcher of a tie early on in the second half. Rylee Osgood got the ball right where she wanted it and put it into the net, giving Bromfield a 1-0 lead. Bromfield’s defense stayed perfect for the most part, but things got a little dicey when Oakmont was able to break away. Jenn Symula, replacing Meghanne Fitzsimmons at the goalie position for the second half, stayed tough, despite the many breakaways that charged her. Osgood tried to get Symula some insurance for a victory, but twice when she had an opening, she was called off-sides by the referees, as she had passed the last line of defenders before receiving a pass.
Tough defense
Those calls and continuing breakaways contributed to a surge by Oakmont, who finally got what they needed, tying the score at 1-1 on a goal by Tess Rembetsy-Brown, just out of the reach of goalie Symula. Things didn’t get easier for Bromfield afterwards. Their defense had issues getting the ball back to their offense without having it stolen. And when the offense did get the ball, it was nearly impossible to get past Oakmont’s defense. But Bromfield did hang tough to bring the game came to a close with a 1-1 tie.
The next girls varsity soccer game is at Littleton, on Monday, Sept. 23, at 3 p.m.
