Family Movie Night
The Harvard Public Library will host a family movie night, rated PG, Friday, May 24, at 6:30 p.m., with complimentary water and popcorn. The library can’t tell you the title of the movie here, but it is a recently released animation based on the “Guardians of Childhood” book series. Preregistration is requested.
Memorial Day Pancake Breakfast
The 17th annual Memorial Day pancake breakfast to benefit Loaves and Fishes will take place Monday, May 27, before the parade, between 8 and 9:30 a.m., at the Harvard Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Building. Donations are $8 for adults; $4 for children under 12.
Circle of Songs
The Harvard Public Library will host “Circle of Songs” with Hugh Hanley for infants through age 6 and their caregivers Tuesday, May 28, at 10:30 a.m.. Hanley, an early childhood educator, music specialist, and entertainer, has been singing with young children for over 20 years. He draws from a wide and varied repertoire of songs, fingerplays, and music activities that are appropriate and accessible. Preregistration is requested.
Energy Legislation Summit with Eldridge and Benson
Sen. Jamie Eldridge and Rep. Jen Benson, along with the Harvard Energy Advisory Committee and representatives from the Harvard Solar Garden, will update the community on local efforts to reduce energy use and state legislative proposals to help those efforts on Tuesday, May 28, at 7 p.m. in Volunteers Hall.
Three Friends Art Show
The Three Harvard Friends art show will continue at the Center on the Common until May 31. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sunday through Tuesday by appointment.
Shakespeare in the Park
The Bromfield Drama Society will present Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” Friday, May 31, Saturday, June 1, and Sunday, June 2, at 7:30 p.m. in front of the Harvard Public Library on an outdoor stage built by the Bromfield School stage technology and production design classes. Admission is $5 for students and senior citizens and $10 for adults. Bring a lawn chair or blanket. In case of inclement weather, the performance will be in Cronin Auditorium.
Jince McCurdy Art Exhibit
The Center on the Common will present a retrospective exhibit of art by Jince McCurdy June 1 through 8, with a reception of the artist Saturday, June 1, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Center.
Candlelight Yoga
The Virginia Thurston Healing Garden’s once-a-month candlelight yoga class will be Monday, June 3, from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. at 145 Bolton Road. To register, call 978-456-3532. Information on other classes open to the community may be found at www.healinggarden.net.
Sending the Graduates Off
Members of Bromfield’s class of 2013, along with family and friends, have several upcoming events. The Senior Athletic Banquet is Tuesday, June 4, at 6 p.m. in the Bromfield cafeteria. New this year, the Senior Scholarship and Awards night, Wednesday, June 5, will start with a reception at 6:15 p.m.; scholarship and award presentations will begin promptly at 7 p.m. On Thursday, June 6, the senior class will be presenting their “Class Day” program for students in grades 9 to 11 at 12:45 p.m. Graduation is Friday, June 7. Seniors should report to the school at 4:30 p.m. The ceremony will begin promptly at 5:30 p.m. and should conclude by 7 p.m., followed by a reception hosted by the Class of 2014.
The Whalemobile
The Whalemobile program, sponsored by the Harvard Public Library for kindergarten through grade 5, will begin with a presentation on whales of New England and will end with the inflation of Nile, a 43-foot inflatable humpback whale on Wednesday, June 5, at 1:30 p.m. at the library. Children may see, touch, and feel whale artifacts, learn about natural history, identification, and behavior of humpback whales, and have a chance to go inside Nile. Enrollment is limited to 60 children and their accompanying adults. Preregistration is requested.
League of Women Voters Annual Meeting
The annual meeting of the League of Women Voters of Harvard will be held Thursday, June 6, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Center on the Common. The evening will begin with a finger foods potluck meal. In addition to the regular business meeting, there will be a discussion of the League’s “Civility Matters” project, with opportunities for input. The public is invited. Forage for Your Food
Back by popular demand, Russ Cohen, regional naturalist and wild food enthusiast, will lead an evening walk searching for wild edibles Thursday, June 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Fruitlands Museum. The event is cosponsored by the Harvard Conservation Trust and Fruitlands Museum. HCT and Fruitlands members are admitted for free; $10 for nonmembers. Limited to 30 participants. Center on the Common Dinner and Jazz
Dinner and Jazz at the Center on the Common, Friday, June 7, at 7 p.m., will feature The Fauré Project with Chesky recording artist Louise Rogers and pianist Mark Kross offering jazz interpretations of songs by composer Gabriel Fauré. Dinner will be a French picnic—including salads, quiches, and baguette sandwiches—from La Provence in Concord. Tickets for music and dinner are $25 per person. Freedom’s Way Celebrates National Preservation Month
For over seven years, Freedom’s Way has been casting a “Spotlight” on local treasures that make this National Heritage Area a special place for living, working, and playing. During May—National Preservation Month—the towns of Lunenburg, Leominster, and Sterling will offer self-guided heritage tours of their distinctive places. The Sterling Historical Society will hold an open house Monday, May 27, from 9 to 11 a.m. at 7 Pine St. in Sterling. Details for each town are available at www. freedomsway.org.
Emerson Hospital 5K Run-Walk
The Emerson Hospital Auxiliary will hold its 13th annual 5K Run-Walk and Family Funday for Cancer Saturday, June 1, at the Thoreau Club field, 275 Forest Ridge Road in Concord. Cosponsored by the Thoreau Club and Marx Running & Fitness Center, activities will include a barbeque, tot trot for ages 5 and under, 1-mile fun run for ages 5-12, tie-dye T-shirt making, inflatable obstacle course, volleyball, badminton, and swimming. Entry fees, which include snacks and the post-race barbecue, are $25 by May 29 and $30 on race day for adults, or $12 for the kids’ fun run. The Science of Flow
The Nashua River Watershed Association invites young scientists, ages 7 to 11, to Science Saturday—”The Science of Flow: Liquids and Rivers” on Saturday, June 8, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the NRWA River Resource Center, 592 Main St. in Groton. Participants will learn how engineers study liquid flow and the science behind the way water flows, experiment with floating natural boats on the Nashua River, race boats, and learn about velocity in liquids. NRWA Outdoor Wellness Walk
Mary Marro, Nashua River Watershed Association environmental education director, will lead a 45- to 60-minute wellness and learning walk along the Nashua River Rail Trail Saturday, June 8, from 3 to 4 p.m., beginning at the Station Avenue kiosk on the trail in Groton.
