At their first home meet this season, the Bromfield girls and boys track and field teams scored victories over Narragansett. The meet was held at the McCurdy Track on Lancaster County Road.
For the Bromfield girls, the victory was a narrow one, leading to an especially intense 4×400 meter relay, their final event. Narragansett took an early lead, but on the last leg, Bromfield’s Deirdre Kennedy passed her opponent and sealed a win for her team. The Bromfield girls went on to win the meet 72-71.
Reflecting on the race, Kennedy told the Press, “Going in I felt somewhat nervous—Narragansett is always a great team and tough competition. I had faith in my teammates, though, [knowing] that we would all do the best we could and have lots of fun with this close 4×400….My teammates had great splits against the fast Narragansett relay, and the other Bromfield girls all had such great performances in their events that I was just happy the team effort was able to show and pull Bromfield ahead.”
The Bromfield boys team had a strong meet, winning by a score of 89.5 to 55.5. The boys scored points in every event, placing first in 12 out of 17 competitions, further adding to their already impressive score.
Team sets new records
The school record board will undergo serious changes this season. Freshman Carlisle Ferguson broke the girls’ pole vault record with a height of eight feet, six inches. Senior Brendan Beale broke the boys’ record with an impressive height of 10 feet, three inches, which is three inches higher than the previous one.
Freshman Beck Peterson had a great day in discus. With a huge throw of 109 feet, 10 inches, he broke the school record. When asked about his achievement, Peterson told the Press, “My first thought was ‘Wow, I can’t believe I’ve already done it’. I was extremely excited that I had been able to reach my goal of breaking Bromfield’s previous discus throwing record my first year of high school.”
