The Bromfield girls and boys track and field teams scored decisive victories against Clinton on Friday, April 5, in their first meet of the outdoor season. The dual meet took place at Bromfield’s home track on Lancaster County Road.
The Bromfield girls put on quite a show of strength, considering the fact that Coach Kristin Taschereau permitted only two events per competitor—in contrast to the usual four—in order to avoid overexertion at this early stage in the season. However, this limitation did not seem to pose a problem for Bromfield when it came to points; they finished victorious with a score of 78 to Clinton’s 51.
Captain Kara Kennedy told the Press she has high hopes for the coming season: “Everyone’s just going to get faster as it goes on and as they choose more events to do. So I can’t wait to see what happens,” she said.
Freshman Carlisle Ferguson shattered the Bromfield record in pole vault with a height of eight feet, exactly one foot over the former record. The pole vault is a relatively new event to Bromfield, premiering last year in the spring of 2012. Ferguson had this to say about her achievement: “I was really excited once I went over and realized the bar wasn’t going to drop… I guess I just pretended the bar was a lot lower than it really was so I wouldn’t get nervous or worked up.”
The Bromfield boys team fared even better than the girls against Clinton, crushing their opponents with a final total of 101 to 44. Earning first place in 14 out of 17 events, the Bromfield boys look forward to an exciting outdoor season. According to Coach David Boisvert, “We’ve got a lot of talent on the team, that’s for sure, but they know they’ve got to keep training if they want to keep winning.”
