Committee approves hiring Dubrule
The School Committee voted to authorize interim Superintendent Joe Connelly to hire Dr. Michael Dubrule as interim director of special Education, to replace the retiring Pam DeGregorio. Dubrule will serve from January through June, 2013.
Dubrule was superintendent of the Leicester Public Schools from 1998 to 2008. From 1985 to 1998, he was director of curriculum assessment and student services in Hudson, a position that included supervision of special education programs. Earlier in his career, he had been a director of special education, director of pupil services, and school psychologist in several central Massachusetts school systems.
Dubrule told the School Committee that he had begun his career as a director of special education in 1975, three years after the passage of Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 766, which guaranteed all children the right to a free, appropriate, public education.
“A lot of us were feeling our way through and building programs from scratch,” Dubrule said.
Dubrule noted that the special education position calls for sensitivity and diplomacy to make sure that all children are educated up to their potential, but requires attention to protecting the school system as well.
Speaking of his plans as an interim director in Harvard, the retired Dubrule said, “My career is over. I have no interest in becoming a full-time special education director…I have no other interest in coming to Harvard than to serve the schools and enhance them as best I can.”
Harvard Schools Trust provides support at all grade levels
Four new grants from the Harvard Schools Trust provide funding for a range of school programs from kindergarten through high school. One grant supports a kindergarten field trip to hear a program at Mechanics Hall in Worcester. A second will help faculty and students to renovate the school garden in the Bromfield courtyard. A third will purchase supplies for the newly created wellness program. And the fourth will help to fund Bromfield’s Model United Nations program.
The grants total $5,421.
