Selectmen ask to abandon portion of Elm Street

August 24, 2012

Among the five articles of the Special Town Meeting warrant is one that aims to warn off those lost souls whose GPS devices lead them up Elm Street on the west side of the Common and into the Town Hall parking lot.

“You wouldn’t believe how many cars come racing up that road,” Town Administrator Tim Bragan said.

Most GPS systems suggest that it’s a way to cut from Still River Road to Ayer Road, but that has been impossible for years, said Bragan. Formerly, he said, Elm Street continued around the north end of Town Hall and connected to Ayer Road.

Article 3 asks the Town “to discontinue and abandon” the portion of Elm Street between the house nearest Town Hall and the road that leads from Ayer Road to the Hildreth House. With a change to official maps of the area, perhaps the large databases that drive Google Maps and other GPS software will at last urge drivers to seek alternate routes.
