Harvard added to Economic Target Area

August 31, 2012

In April 2011, Annual Town Meeting voted to authorize the Board of Selectmen to petition the state Legislature to pass a special act that would add the town of Harvard to the Economic Target Area that includes Devens, Ayer, Shirley, Groton, and Pepperell. The Harvard Economic Development Committee announced this week that the legislation has been enacted and the bill was signed by Governor Deval Patrick this month.

The Economic Development Committee said it wishes to thank state Representative Jen Benson and state Senator Jamie Eldridge for their work in seeing this petition through the process.

Now that Harvard has joined an Economic Target Area, it may participate in the Massachusetts Economic Development Incentive Program.  The EDIP is a tax incentive program designed to foster job creation and business growth in Massachusetts. The tools available through the program may be helpful in assisting a business that is expanding in Harvard, according to the Economic Development Committee.
