The Harvard Farmers’ Market is opening on Aug. 11, while the Harvard Press staff is enjoying its summer break. The Farmers’ Market is always reliably full of tasty and fresh produce (and the best bagels in New England), but this year, organizers are adding a community service component. The new Farm to Friend program allows backyard (and, we assume, front- and side-yard) gardeners to donate the fruits of their labor to help those in need in the community. (See the Farmers’ Market story in the Press this week for more information.)
The era when Harvard could be called a truly agricultural community may have passed, but vegetable gardening remains a popular pastime for local residents. We’re glad to see the Farmers’ Market honor the town’s agricultural heritage and encourage small-time farmers to put their hobbies, and their land, to good use by helping others.
Your coworkers don’t need more zucchini. Why not donate it to someone who will actually appreciate the gesture?
And for those who don’t grow their own vegetables, there’s no better way to support local growers than to patronize the Farmer’s Market. It will be open in the Hildreth Elementary School parking lot from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays through the end of October.
