Bird Walk at Fruitlands
Fruitlands Museum and the Brookline Bird Club will offer a free bird walk led by local birder Pat White Saturday, July 7, beginning at 6:30 a.m. in the paved parking lot beside Fruitlands’ museum store. For latecomers, the group will probably be within sight for the first half hour. Many of the resident species will be feeding their young, and there should be good views of young thrushes, warblers, grosbeaks, and possibly bobolinks or meadowlarks. The walk will cover about two miles through meadow and woods with some steep sections.
Healing Sound Journey
The Virginia Thurston Healing Garden will host two Healing Sound Journey workshops with Usui Reiki Master Janine Sousa Thursdays, July 12 and Aug. 9, from 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at 145 Bolton Road. Lego Club
The Harvard Public Library’s Lego Club, for ages five and up, will meet Monday, July 9, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring their own Lego bricks to build Lego creations with other Harvard Lego fans. Advance registration is requested.
Paws and Read
The Harvard Public Library will offer its Paws and Read program Wednesdays, from July 11 through Aug. 8, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Reading to Winston the Therapy Dog is a way to bolster a child’s reading confidence. Advance registration is requested.
Jay Mankita in Concert
The Harvard Public Library will host Jay Mankita in a concert for all ages Tuesday, July 10, at 3 p.m. Mankita is a well-known songwriter/guitarist who plays fun, funky songs on electric and acoustic guitars and invites participation from kids and their families. An activist for social and environmental change, Mankita tours in his Veggie Voyager van that runs on recycled vegetable oil, which he enjoys showing to folks after the show. Weather permitting, the concert will take place outdoors to a crowd of unlimited size. But, in the case of rain, seating will be indoors and limited, and advanced registration will be required for admission.
Family Movie Nights
The next Family Movie Nights at the Harvard Public Library will be Thursday, July 12 and Thursday, July 26, at 6:30 p.m. with a G-rated movie, for all ages. Popcorn and water will be served. Registration is requested so librarians will know how much popcorn to buy.
Concord Band Series at Fruitlands
The Concord Band’s summer season will continue with its Thursday night concerts at Fruitlands Museum July 12, 19, and 26 at 7:15 p.m. Attendees are welcome to bring picnics to the open-air event. The parking fee, which supports both the band and Fruitlands, is $15 per car, or $10 for Fruitlands members. In the case of rain, the concert will be canceled. Invasive Species Workshop
Fruitlands Museum will host an Invasive Control Workshop at the museum Saturday, July 14, at 10 a.m. The project is part of the National Resources Conservation Service’s Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program. Joan Deely from Polatin Ecological Services in Gill will lead the workshop, which is geared towards homeowners, gardening enthusiasts, and professional landscapers—anyone who may be confronted with invasives on their property or in their work. Participants will learn how to tell what plants might be a problem and what to do in response. The cost is $85 for museum members and $115 for non-members. Healing Garden Concert
The Virginia Thurston Healing Garden’s next Concert at the Garden Sunday, July 15, at 3 p.m. will feature Spanish classical guitar music by Thomas Rohde and flamenco dance with Eve Costarelli. Rohde has performed as a soloist throughout Brazil, Taiwan, and the United States. Costarelli is a familiar face on the Boston flamenco scene. The Garden, in collaboration with Indian Hill, brings musicians and dancers to perform in this monthly series. Admission is $10 for Garden members, $15 for non-members. Well Adult Clinic
Nashoba Associated Boards of Health, in conjunction with the Harvard Board of Health, will hold a Well Adult Clinic Tuesday, July 17, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Hildreth House. Drop-in services will be available for blood pressure checks, pulse screening, and diet teaching. No appointment is necessary. Wolf Talk at the Library
Michael LeBlanc of Wolf Talk will return to the Harvard Public Library to conduct two one-hour live animal presentations Thursday, July 19. LeBlanc will teach the audience about wolf behavior in captivity and in the wild, eating habits of wolves, and wolf pack structure. In addition to a live wolf, he will bring a display of furs, skulls, and more. There will also be a question-and-answer session at the end of the program. Any wolves they bring to program sites have been raised by Michael and Amy LeBlanc personally. Wolf Talk is state and federally licensed for education. World-class Frisbee Show and Play Shop
The Harvard Public Library will host two-time World Freestyle Frisbee Champion Todd Brodeur with a Frisbee workshop for all ages Tuesday, July 24, from 4 to 5 p.m. Brodeur will demonstrate simple tricks and catches and show more difficult moves and combinations. He will teach the class tricks and catches that everyone can try. A collection of various types of Frisbees will be shown. Frisbees, which Todd will autograph, will be for sale after the show. Registration is requested and registrants will be notified if weather conditions require rescheduling the program.
Shine On Workshops
The Virginia Thurston Healing Garden will host a four-week Shine On series Wednesdays from 9 to 10:15 a.m. July 25 through August 15. Shine On™ by Stillness Power is designed to maintain overall well-being with yoga disciplines delivered in a fun and non-competitive setting that are intended to empower participants to improve their quality of life. Lodge Fundraiser at Ayer Celebration
The Caleb Butler Lodge and the Ayer Masonic Association will hold their annual fundraiser at the Ayer Fourth of July celebration Saturday, July 7, at Pirone Park in Ayer. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be for sale, in addition to the group’s famous strawberry shortcake. Also at the concession will be Mr. Josh, the tattoo artist, who will be have a variety of temporary tattoos available.
‘Patton’ and WWII Veteran Talk at Strand Theatre
The Fort Devens Museum will show “Patton,” followed by a talk by World War II veteran John Katsaros, Saturday, July 7, at 2 p.m. at the Strand Theatre at 58 High St. in Clinton. After the movie, Staff Sargent USAAF Retired John Katsaros will tell his story. Surviving a B-17 bailout in 1944 over France, he was captured by the Gestapo. His rescue by the French Underground began his journey for freedom through France and Spain, a story detailed in his book “Code Burgundy—The Long Escape,” which will be available at the event.
