I read with dismay that the Parks and Recreation Commission is seriously considering doubling the size of the boat ramp, moving the kayak and canoe racks farther from the water, and eliminating some parking at the beach. It seems as though gas-powered boats are to receive higher priority than people-powered boats.
As a senior kayaker, I’d like to lobby for more racks and for the racks to stay close to the water.
People-powered activities should be increasing, too, because the new pond director is planning more programs for younger swimmers and encouraging the use of town-owned sailboats, kayaks, and canoes.
Since the majority of the people using the pond do not use motorboats, I recommend that any significant changes—like the modifications to the ramp and surrounding areas—be voted on at Town Meeting before being implemented.
