Trojans season highlights
The baseball season has ended, and Bromfield has only a 5-13 record to show for its efforts. Yet the season was highlighted by a few outstanding accomplishments and many bright spots. The team’s defense played well, turning over a number of double plays, but the main weapon was the offense. Tom Konop, voted League All-Star, walloped almost every pitcher he faced. Tom had a .385 batting average during the season, .410 in the 14 league games, and Ed Boyce had a .429 seasonal average and a .400 league average.
Tom belted nine hits over Bromfield’s wall, seven of them for home runs, and also had three doubles, two triples, and nine RBIs. The Trojans hit 11 home runs in all, as Ken Roberts cracked two and Jason Edmonds and Russ Nicholson had one apiece.
Vandals nabbed after spray-paint spree
The Bromfield high school and the back of the General Store building were both sprayed with fluorescent paint during the night of June 12 and 13. Three young men, Harvard residents, have been apprehended and will appear at hearings in Clinton District Court on July 8.

Pond swimming area will be screened to control weed growth
In an attempt to find some way to control weed growth in the swimming area, the Bare Hill Pond Study Committee will purchase 7,500 square feet of Aquascreen, a polyvinyl-coated Fiberglass screening developed specifically for weed control, and lay it on the pond floor from the ropes to the area around the second raft.
According to Gerry Smith of Aquatic Control Technology, Aquascreen kills weeds by compression and by screening out sunlight required for their growth. Committee members decided to try the fine screening this year as an alternative to the York rake, a device they used early last summer to clear the swimming area of weeds.
