Library Book Sale – Last Chance
There’s one more chance to find books at the Friends of the Harvard Public Library’s Annual Book Sale Saturday, May 19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the old library.
Birding at the Oxbow
Naturalists Dick and Peggy Knowlton from Audubon’s Wachusett Meadow will lead a birding hike at the Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge Saturday, May 19, at 7 a.m., beginning at the Oxbow parking lot at the end of Still River Depot Road. Participants will look for breeding populations of migratory birds and learn about the local birds found there. Last year, 38 different species of birds were observed. Celebration Open House
The Bromfield Prom will be held Friday, May 18, and the annual alcohol-free, all-night Celebration party will follow. The community is invited to an Open House from 9 to 10 p.m. to see the transformation from school to Celebration wonderland created by hundreds of volunteers and supporters to keep students safe and entertained. Guaranteed to be amazing.
Armed Forces Day at the Fort Devens Museum
Fort Devens Museum will hold an open house Saturday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to observe Armed Forces Day with exhibits, talks, and an opportunity to share conversation about the military and local history over refreshments. Guest speaker talks throughout the day will include: The Korean War, 11 a.m.; Patches and Insignia, noon; Archaeology at Fort Devens, 1 p.m.; and WWI and WWII barracks at Fort Devens, 2 p.m. The program is free and open to the public. The museum is located on the third floor at 94 Jackson Road in Devens. Signs and balloons will lead to the parking area. Just ‘Cause We Can Walk
The Virginia Thurston Healing Garden will hold its Just ‘Cause 3.5 mile walk Saturday, May 19, beginning at the garden at 145 Bolton Road. Check-in time and registration is 7 a.m. and the walk will start at 8 a.m. The registration fee is $25 per person with a $100 cap per family. 100 percent of the funds raised will go directly to the support of local women with cancer, regardless of financial barriers. Garden Club Plant Sale
The Garden Club of Harvard will hold its Annual Plant Sale Saturday, May 19, at 9 a.m. to noon on the Common, rain or shine. Proceeds from the sale support local landscaping and seasonal projects, book donations to the library, and other local community projects. The sale will offer a wide variety of healthy perennials, annuals, herbs, small shrubs, and vegetables for both sunny and shady locations. Garden Club members will gladly offer advice to the novice gardener.
Girl Scout Parent-Daughter Dance
The Harvard Girl Scouts will hold their Annual Parent-Daughter Dance Saturday, May 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Harvard Congregational Church Fellowship Hall. DJ Police Chief Denmark will provide the music. There will be crafts, refreshments, and a Girl Scout patch for all. The dance is $5 per person with a $15 family cap.
Artist Exhibit Opens at Fruitlands
Fruitlands’ 2012 Artist-in-Residence, sculptor Andy Moerlein of Bow, New Hampshire, will open his exhibit, “Of a Personal Nature—Topographical Impressions,” Sunday, May 20, at 1 p.m. at the museum. Moerlein will give a talk at 2 p.m. on his work. The exhibition features embossed paper prints, wall-hung sculptures, and paintings that relate to the large outdoor sculptures Moerlein will be building on the museum grounds throughout the 2012 season.
Harvard Help Annual Meeting
The Harvard Help annual meeting will be held Monday, May 21 at 7 p.m., at the home of Pat Edmonds, 68 Slough Road. Harvard Help volunteers and interested townspeople are invited.
