The Bromfield boys track team defeated both opponents in a double-dual meet last Monday, April 25, at the McCurdy Track. The Trojans triumphed 109-36 against Clinton, and 114-31 against Tyngsboro.
In a double-dual meet, each team competes against two other opponents with separate head-to-head scores determining the outcome for each dual combination.
“It’s almost as if you’re having two track meets going on simultaneously,” said boys coach David Boisvert.
In this meet, the Bromfield boys placed first against either Tyngsboro or Clinton in every event, while also sweeping several races, in which they placed first, second, and third.
In the 1-mile, freshman Price Day, junior Emmet Norton, and sophomore Sam Dyer finished in the top three against both Clinton and Tyngsboro with times of 4 minute, 51.8 seconds; 5 minutes, 2.1 seconds; and 5 minute, 13.5 seconds.
Junior Glenn Steranka, senior Erik Johnson, and sophomore Jake Valladares swept the 110-meter high hurdles against Tyngsboro with times of 17.2 seconds, 17.6 seconds, and 18.6 seconds. Steranka and Johnson also placed first and second against Clinton.
Bromfield juniors dominated the 200-meter, as Dan Colony, Matt Griffin, and Brendan Beale placed in the top three against Tyngsboro with times of 23.8 seconds, 25.2 seconds, and 25.5 seconds. Colony and Griffin also dashed to first and second against Clinton.
In the 100-meter, junior Roniel Foster sprinted to first place against Clinton and second place against Tyngsboro in 12 seconds. Hunter Siegrist followed closely behind, placing third against Tyngsboro in 12.8 seconds.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Beale, the sole Bromfield runner, performed spectacularly, as he placed first overall with a time of 1 minute, 5.8 seconds.
“Brendan has come a long way… A really long way,” Boisvert said.
In the similar, yet hurdle-less 400-meter, junior Patrick Griffin and sophomore Paul Malloy placed first and second against Clinton with times of 52.7 seconds, and 54.0 seconds. Against Tyngsboro, Griffin and Malloy placed second and third.
In the 800-meter, freshman Will Malloy and Norton placed first and second overall with times of 2 minute 12.1 seconds, and 2 minutes, 13 seconds, respectively.
Senior Ellis Toll and freshman Matt Polimou (placed first and third overall in the 2-mile with impressive times of 10 minutes, 39.8 seconds, and 11 minutes, 46.8 seconds.
In the 4×100-meter relay, Colony, Steranka, Siegrist, and Foster sprinted the four legs of the Trojan juggernaut that outran both of its opponents with a time of 47.8 seconds.
“They are very good, and improving” Boisvert said.
In the 4×400-meter relay, Day, junior William Sullebarger, Siegrist, and Foster placed first against Tyngsboro with a speedy 3 minute, 58.2 second time.
In the field events, Bromfield placed first in every event, against both teams, except for the pole vault against Clinton. Despite the minor blemish on an otherwise perfect streak, the Bromfield field event participants have always been a vital part of the Trojan powerhouse.
“People always like to emphasize running,” Boisvert said. “But it’s not just track, it’s track and field. Our field event people rack up a lot of the points that bring in our wins.”
Senior Deji Oyekunle, eighth-grader Beck Peterson, and junior Jared Gall placed in the top three against Tyngsboro in the discus with distances of 88 feet, 10 inches; 73 feet; and 61 feet, 7 inches. Oyekunle also placed first against Clinton.
In the high jump, Steranka and Valladares placed first and third overall with heights of 5 feet, 6 inches, and 5 feet, 2 inches.
In the javelin throw, Johnson launched his javelin far ahead of any opponent, landing him in first place overall with a tremendous distance of 136 feet, 3 inches. Junior Alex Ortiz threw to second against Clinton and third against Tyngsboro for a distance of 101 feet, 10 inches.
Patrick Griffin (19 feet, 9.25 inches) and Foster (18 feet, 6 inches) dominated the long jump, as they leapt to first and second.
In the shot put, Oyekunle, junior John Hubert, and eighth-grader Ryan Byrne placed in the top three with distances of 41 feet, 10.5 inches; 34 feet, 2 inches; and 27 feet, 5 inches.
Against Tyngsboro, Johnson, Dyer, and Beale swept the pole vault; however, against Clinton, Johnson and Dyer placed second and third. Johnson jumped 9 feet, 6 inches, while Dyer and Beale both jumped 8 feet, 6 inches.
