I recently learned that Dr. Sharon McCarthy has chosen to run for the Board of Health and I would like to offer some comments. I had the pleasure of serving with Sharon on the School Committee for quite some time and found her to be a thoughtful and capable leader, open to listening to—and weighing—all points of view. Sharon is also wiling to dig deeply into complex issues for a thorough understanding in order to make (or lead to consensus on) an informed and appropriate decision. These traits served her well on the School Committee, and are likewise critical to the complexities of the kinds of issues within the purview of the Board of Health. Sharon is uniquely qualified via her education and her professional experience as an environmental scientist for service on the Board of Health, giving her deep and cogent expertise in protecting public health. I believe that the citizens of Harvard would do well to elect such a dedicated volunteer, given her profound experience both in the dynamics of our town boards and with environmental issues.
