These are delicious. The recipe from Fannie Farmer’s old, old cookbook.
⅓ cup shortening (soft)
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup sugar
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
1 egg
½ cup milk
1 ½ cups flour
1 ½ teaspoon baking powder
⅓ cup melted butter
½ cup more sugar mixed with 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Mix the shortening, ½ cup sugar, and egg very well. Mix the flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
Stir into shortening mixture alternately with the ½ cup milk.
Fill muffin tins ⅔ full and bake for 20 to 25 minutes at 350 degrees. While they’re baking, melt the butter and mix the sugar and cinnamon together. As soon as you take them out of the oven, roll them in the melted butter, then in the sugar/cinnamon mixture.
