Family Movie Night
The Harvard Public Library will host a Family Movie Night Friday, March 2, at 6:30 p.m. The movie is rated PG, for all ages. Preregistration is requested so the librarians will know how much popcorn to buy.
John Chapman and Friends Jazz Band
Harvard Friends of the Arts will present John Chapman and Friends Jazz Band in concert Saturday, March 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Volunteers Hall at the Harvard Public Library. Chapman, a jazz and classical pianist, will be joined by two other Harvard residents, Helen Batchelder on vocals and guitar and Francis Begue on guitar, as well as Berklee College of Music professor Dave Clark on bass, Dave Fox on drums, and Neil Kruszkowski playing sax. Handmade Harvard Arts and Crafts Fair
The Harvard Woman’s Club will host Handmade Harvard, an arts and crafts fair featuring the work of local artisans, Saturday, March 3, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Building on Elm Street. The fair will offer the opportunity to see and buy one-of-a-kind handmade treasures and to support local artists and crafters. The afternoon will include a silent auction with donations from participating artists and crafters, local businesses, and club members. The Woman’s Club will sell hearty, homemade soups and sweets for lunch. All proceeds from Handmade Harvard will support local, non-profit community organizations. Track and Field Pancake Breakfast
The Bromfield Track and Field teams will host a breakfast fundraiser Sunday, March 4, from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Bromfield Cafe. The teams promise delicious pancakes, bacon, and more, plus raffles to support the boys and girls track teams. Chef Paul will be working the griddle. $5 for seniors and kids age 4 and up, $8 for other adults, $25 family cap.
Whose tracks are these?
Nashaway Trackers members Susan Fly and Donna Mackie will share their expertise at reading wildlife signs and will offer a chance to become a mammal detective Sunday, March 4, at 1 p.m. at the Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge. Attendees should dress warmly and bring a snack and water, as well as snowshoes if there is deep snow. Children are welcome. Evergreen Garden Playschool and Oxbow Schoolhouse Open House
Evergreen Garden Playschool and Oxbow Schoolhouse will hold an Open House and tour Sunday, March 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. at 270 Barnum Road in Devens. Tips for Growing Vegetables the Easy Way
The Virginia Thurston Healing Garden will sponsor “Tips for Growing Vegetables the Easy Way” in a workshop Saturday, March 10, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Garden. Jennifer Angell, a certified horticultural therapist, will cover in-ground versus container plantings, raised beds, soil, composting, planting seeds versus plants, gardening tools, managing pests, and more. Participants should bring photos if possible, know what their soil is like, how much sun the area gets, and what direction it faces. Cost is $15 for members, $20 for non-members.

Healing Sound Journey
The Virginia Thurston Healing Garden will offer a Healing Sound Journey Thursday, March 8, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 145 Bolton Road. Led by Usai Reiki master Janina Sousa, the sound journey will offer the potential to enter a relaxed, meditative state and healing space. Occupy the Old Harvard Library
Occupy the Old Harvard Library and support the arts in Harvard Thursday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m. under the full moon. Former Wild Apples journal editors Linda Hoffman, Lynn Horsky, Kathryn Liebowitz, Susan Edwards Richmond, and Sophie Wadsworth will read selected poetry and prose and present “Liberty’s Vigil: The Occupy Anthology,” an anthology of 99 poets from among the 99 percent. Concert Series at the Healing Garden
The Virginia Thurston Healing Garden will hold the first in a series of Concerts at the Garden Sunday, March 11, at 3 p.m. The Indian Hill Jazz Standards ensemble will play jazz standards spanning American tunes from the 1940s to today. The Garden, in collaboration with Indian Hill Music School, will bring talented musicians and dancers to perform in this monthly series. The Healing Garden is located at 145 Bolton Road. HES Festival of Cultures
The Harvard PTO will sponsor its fifth annual Festival of Cultures, “Places to See,” Friday, March 16, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Hildreth Elementary School. The purpose of the two-part event is to embrace, celebrate, and value the diversity in the community.
From 6 to 7:15 p.m. in the HES gym, visitors will have a chance to visit with ambassadors, Hildreth Elementary School family members with direct experience in the roughly 18 countries or regions they represent. Children will receive passports as they travel from country to country, learning about landmarks, art, culture, sports, religions, food, history, music, and locations. A hands-on craft area will offer crafts from around the world. A silent auction will include donated international food items and meals delivered or served at a future date.

‘Kilimanjaro: Journey to the Roof of Africa’
Peter Christoph, a respected photographer and president of the Camera Club of Central New England, will lead a photographic journey through five climate zones, from tropical rain forest to arctic conditions, toward the summit of 19,340-foot high Mt. Kilimanjaro Friday, March 16, 7:30 p.m. in Volunteers Hall in the Harvard Public Library. Mt. Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world. This event is part of the Warner Free Lecture Series.
Painting Class with Jill Pottle
Artist Jill Pottle will teach a class on Painting Materials and Methods with Oils and Acrylics for beginning and returning artists who want to learn or brush up on fundamental painting skills Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. beginning March 16 through April 27 at Fruitlands Museum. The Ayer Masonic Association will hold its monthly fundraising breakfast Sunday, March 4, from 7:30 to 10 a.m. at the Ayer Masonic Center, 11 Sculley Road in Ayer. Birds of Prey
Tom Ricardi, a wildlife biologist and licensed rehabilitator, will bring live birds from his Massachusetts Birds of Prey Rehabilitation Facility to the Ayer Town Hall Saturday, March 3, at 10 a.m. Ricardi will talk about the birds, the rehabilitation of injured or sick raptors, and raptor breeding. Adults and children are encouraged to attend. Donations are strongly recommended.
Senator Scott Brown, Speaker
The Republican Town and City Committees of the Middlesex and Worcester Senate District will sponsor a Lincoln-Reagan Dinner with United States Senator Scott Brown Saturday, March 3, at the Holiday Inn, 265 Lakeside Ave., Marlborough. Cocktails will begin at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. The dinner will benefit District Republican State Senate and State House candidates for the Nov. 2012 elections, who all will be in attendance. Backyard Chickens for Everyone
Groton Local will host “Backyard Chickens for Everyone,” a presentation by Groton resident Tiffany Doggett, Thursday, March 15, at 7 p.m., at the Nashua River Watershed Association, 592 Main St. in Groton. Doggett has raised her own growing flock from a combination of fertilized eggs, day-old chicks, 10-week-old chickens, and hens from retiring chicken keepers. She has experience with different breeds and will go through the process of setting up and raising a flock. The talk is free and all are welcome.
