Harvard firefighters Justin Warren and Walter Shaw recently graduated from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy’s Call/Volunteer Firefighter I/II Training Class #38. This course is 240 hours of training that started in July and continued on every Tuesday and Thursday evening as well as every other Saturday until graduation, Dec. 22.
Harvard Fire Chief Richard Sicard commended the two firefighters for their dedicated commitment to complete this course. Sicard said that at this course, firefighters learn all the basic skills they need to respond to fires and to contain and control them. They also receive training in public fire education, incident command, hazardous material incident mitigation, flammable liquids, self-contained breathing apparatus, stress management, water rescue procedures, confined space rescue techniques, and rappelling. The intensive program includes classroom instruction, physical fitness training, firefighter skills and training, and live firefighting practice.
Family is a well known tradition of the Harvard Fire Department. Shaw is the son of Lieutenant Tony Shaw and the great-grandson of firefighter Herbert Shaw. Justin Warren is the son of Lieutenant Rob Warren, retired, and the grandson of Chief Peter Warren, retired.
