In a wide-margin victory, the Bromfield boys indoor track team dominated Narragansett Saturday, Dec. 28, at the Fitchburg High School indoor track.
The Bromfield boys displayed high levels of skill, endurance, and enthusiasm as they defeated their opponents by a score of 75-16, bringing the Trojans to an undefeated 2-0 record.
The boys placed first in the 55-meter high hurdles, 55-meter dash, 300-meter, 1000-meter, 1-mile, 2-mile, high jump, shot put, 4×200-meter relay, and 4×400-meter relay.
Junior Glenn Steranka, sophomore Jake Valladares, and junior Sam Beebe finished in the top three in the 55-meter high hurdles, with times of 9.4 seconds, 9.8 seconds, and 10.1 seconds, respectively.
Juniors Roneil Foster and Dan Colony sprinted to first and second in the 55-meter dash, respectively, with the same time of 7.1 seconds. Similarly, Foster and Colony finished the 300-meter with the same time of 41.4 seconds, except this time, it was Colony that took first, and Foster who finished second.
“Sometimes runners get the same times,” said coach David Boisvert. “The scorekeeper just needs to pay close attention to whose chest crosses the finish line first… It’s funny because Roneil and Dan have always had some sort of a friendly rivalry.”
Senior Nick Kronauer placed first in both the 1000-meter and the 1-mile with times of 3 minutes, 7.4 seconds, and 5 minutes, 25.8 seconds, respectively. Sophomore Paul Malloy placed second in both races, as well, with times of 3 minutes, 10.3 seconds for the 1000-meter, and 5 minutes, 27.7 seconds for the 1-mile.
Senior Ellis Toll and freshman Matt Polimou placed first and third in the 2-mile, with times of 10 minutes, 49.8 seconds, and 12 minutes, 51.5 seconds, respectively.
According to Boisvert, “Matt Polimou has recently stepped up his running performance to miles ahead of where it once was. His improvement is easy to see with the amount of effort he puts into practice.”
Other impressive performances were made by seventh-grader Cole Stecyk and freshman Alvin Li, who placed second and third in the 600-meter with times of 1 minute, 45.2 seconds, and 1 minute, 59.5 seconds, respectively.
Steranka, Valladares, and Foster placed first, second, and third at the high jump with heights of 5 feet, 4 inches, 5 feet, 2 inches, and 4 feet, 10 inches, respectively.
Senior Deji Oyekunle placed first in shot put with a throw of 37 feet, 3 inches.
Both the 4×200-meter relay and the 4×400-meter relay teams placed first, with times of 1 minute, 58.5 seconds, and 4 minutes, 26.7 seconds, respectively.
“This was a very good meet in terms of performance,” Boisvert said. “However, we definitely have some more challenging teams coming up, so it is very important that we keep training hard.”
