After a slow start last Monday, Oct. 10, the Bromfield varsity field hockey team improved to a 7-1-2 record with a 6-0 victory against the Tyngsborough Tigers.
The game began slowly, with the Trojans struggling to bring the ball past Tyngsborough’s defense. After 12 minutes of a back-and-forth game, the Bromfield team used its superior speed and endurance to push forward against the Tigers.
At 11 minutes, 23 seconds, senior right-midfielder Allie Sirrine charged past Tyngsborough’s defense and took a shot on goal, which deflected off of the goalie’s knee, allowing sophomore center-forward Anna Hadorn to smash the ball into the net for the 1-0 lead.
As the first half was just minutes away from ending, the Trojans were still determined to gain a definitive lead over their opponents. At 27 minutes, 48 seconds, sophomore midfielder Jillian Nelson passed the ball to senior right-forward Sarah Andrews, who finished the play with a scoot to the net for the 2-0 lead.
The pressure built up as Tyngsborough attempted to break through Bromfield’s strong defense. As Tyngsborough’s left forward dribbled the ball past the center line, junior right-forward Robin Verheyen stole the ball and dribbled it right outside the Tigers’ goal. With just 11 seconds remaining in the half, Robin quickly passed the ball to sophomore center-forward Gabrielle Doben, who hit the ball into the net for a clear 3-0 advantage.
The Bromfield team continued their shooting spree throughout the second half as the unmatched speed of the forward Trojans left their opponents gasping for air. At 36 minutes, 22 seconds, Bromfield took another successful shot at net. Junior center-midfielder Haley Newsham passed the ball to senior left-forward Caroline Mazzola, who smashed the ball past the Tigers’ goalie.
At 40 minutes, 11 seconds, Hadorn scored again with the assistance of Andrews for a 5-0 lead.
At 45 minutes, with 20 seconds of the game remaining, Newsham took advantage of an open pocket within Tyngsborough’s defense. Newsham charged forward and hit the ball into the goal, securing the solid 6-0 victory over Tyngsborough.
“We did well. We started slow, but once we picked it up and spread the field out it was so much better,” said Coach Sue Silver. “Everyone played well. I had people play in different positions and they did fine. I started a few different people today… and they stepped up to the task.”
