The Friends of the Harvard Library recently held its annual book sale at the old library. Many happy customers went away with stacks of new reading. We estimate that about 10,000 books were sold.
Thanks to the many Harvard residents who donated thousands of books for the sale. Year after year, we are amazed at the volume of donations from our wonderful little town! People often ask what we do with the leftover books after the sale. The “specials” go into storage until next year. About 200 will be sold in the Harvard Public Library lobby. Several nonprofits and schools take hundreds of books as well. We hope next year a nonprofit will be able to take the rest—a for-profit group is taking them this year.
Thanks to the Old Library Pilot Project for allowing us to use the old library, with special thanks to Pam Cochrane. It is the ideal location.
We’d like to point out that the book sale’s profits are returned to the people of Harvard by funding library activities, including children’s programs, the new Consumer Reports Online service, Friends of the Arts performances, museum passes, and a new scholarship to honor Dr. Jeff Harris.
The only way this can happen is by volunteers working hundreds of hours. They sort books, recycle boxes, move furniture, and work at the sale. Among them: Fran and Rick Maiore, Andrea Christianson, Robin Malloy, Peter, Nick and Katrina George, Barbara Hilton, Judy Wong, Lauren Myers-Wong, Pat White, Jan Teresko, Pete Dumont, Stephanie Opalka, Patti Anklam, Barbara and Frank Heim, Ginger Kendall, Carolyn and Layla Stern-Grant, Robin Calderwood, Maureen Phillips, Joe Newpol, Audrey Ball, Marty Green, Risa Goldman, and Abby Hutchinson. Thanks to the Parkinsons for lending us bookshelves. Our apologies if we missed anyone.
The FOHPL Committee was also heavily involved in the planning and execution of the sale: Deborah Sauvé, Kathy Boisvert, Vicki Maxant, Gwen Cook, and Maureen Remeika. Thanks also to Library Director Mary Wilson and her staff.
Until next year, happy reading Harvard!
