Harley Wayne “Whitey” Chamberlain, 84, of Kennebunk, Maine, formerly of Still River, died peacefully in his home, surrounded by family, on June 12, 2011.
He was born in Spencer, Iowa, Sept. 24, 1927, son of Harold and Ruth Chamberlain.
Harley moved to Wells River, Vt., in 1953 and married Carole Ann Bigelow of Still River. The couple married in 1954 and founded Harvard Glass and Auto Body on Ayer Road in 1959. They lived in Still River for 30 memorable years, where they raised their three children, Chad, Bart and Holly. Harley loved maintaining his home, working on his cars, skiing with his sons, snowshoeing on the conservation land behind their house with his daughter, and hosting dinner parties with his wife for their friends and family.
Harley was a devoted Rotarian of the Ayer Rotary club where he was president from 1971 to 1972. He was then elected district governor (Rotary District 791) from 1977 to 1978, which allowed him the opportunity to travel to Japan and Europe.
Harley spent summer vacations with his family on Cape Cod. His love of the ocean led to purchasing property on Hills Beach in southern Maine in 1970, where he and Carole spent many summers together enjoying sailing around Basket Island and walks on the beach. The couple later retired to Channel Cove in Biddeford, Maine, and most recently to Kennebunk, Maine.
Harley is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carole; his brother, Bob Chamberlain, of Okoboji, Iowa; son Chad and his wife, Fernanda, of Goshen, Vt.; son Bart of Hollis, Maine; and daughter Holly and her husband, Stephen Ross, of Kennebunkport, Maine. He is survived by four grandchildren, Emily, Ben, Ella, and James.
There will be a Celebration of Life service held at the Church on the Cape, 3 Langsford Road, Cape Porpoise, Maine, Saturday, June 18, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Southern Maine Hospice Center, 11 Hunnewell Road, Scarborough, ME 04074 or the Church on the Cape, 3 Langsford Road, Cape Porpoise, ME.
