The Bromfield Trojans baseball team defeated the Ayer Panthers last Wednesday by a score of 19-2, improving to 2-9 on the season, while the Panthers fell to 3-8.
All six of Bromfield’s first six base runners scored in the first inning, with Bromfield sending 10 batters to the plate. After shortstop Derek Silver was hit by a pitch to lead off the game, junior catcher Will Byler tripled on a deep fly over the leftfielder. Second baseman Mitch Williams singled in Byler for Bromfield’s second run. After a Miles Jarvis walk, senior third baseman Brett Keating singled up the middle, scoring Williams. Freshman first baseman Ben Veno walked to load the bases for centerfielder Will Nocka, who cleared the bases with a double.
Junior pitcher Clayton Galeski turned in a beautiful pitching performance, throwing five innings and allowing two runs on one hit. He walked just two batters.
Bromfield continued its success at the plate in the second and third innings. Byler and Williams singled to lead off the second, and Jarvis plated both runners with a double. In the third, Trevor Granville singled in Galeski for Bromfield’s eighth run of the afternoon.
In the fourth inning, Jarvis singled, Keating was hit by a pitch, and Veno reached on an error to load the bases, once again, for Nocka. Nocka delivered for the second time, doubling in Jarvis and Keating. Bromfield was held scoreless in an inning for the first time all game in the fifth inning.
In the sixth, Silver was hit by a pitch, his second of three times getting hit that game, and Byler singled to score the quick Silver. Bromfield’s lead was extended to 15-2 on that hit. Keating was hit by a pitch in the seventh; then Peter Moberly and Clayton Galeski singled, scoring two more runs. A Silver hit-by-pitch, and Byler and John Fobert singles scored two more runs, shoring up the 19-2 lead for Bromfield.
Nocka pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning, and Byler turned in a scoreless seventh, securing the blowout victory for the Trojans.
