Letter carriers sponsor food drive
The National Association of Letter Carriers will sponsor a “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive Saturday, May 14. Postal patrons are asked to help by bagging nonperishable food items and leaving them at the mailbox for pickup and later delivery to local food banks.
Grant application deadline looming
The deadline for an education grant from the Garden Club of Harvard is Monday, May 16. Individuals or organizations involved in horticulture, landscape design, environmental education, or a related field can apply. USAG Devens issues range-noise bulletin
The U.S. Army Garrison at Devens has issued this notice about upcoming events that will result in increased noise from the area:
- Friday, May 13: MK19 familiarization fire, noon to 9 p.m.
- Saturday, May 14: MK19 familiarization fire, 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- Sunday, May 15: MK19 familiarization fire, 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- Monday, May 16: MK19 familiarization fire, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Tuesday, May 17: Joint precision air drops, noon to 4 p.m.
- Friday, May 20: MK19 familiarization fire, noon to 9 p.m.
- Saturday, May 21: MK19 familiarization fire, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Tuesday, May 24: Joint precision air drops, noon to 4 p.m.
- Tuesday, May 31: Joint precision air drops, noon to 4 p.m.
NRWA seeks volunteers to monitor purple loosestrife beetles
For the past three years, the Squannassit-Petapawag ACEC Stewardship Committee and the Nashua River Watershed Association (NRWA) have participated in a pilot project to control invasive purple loosestrife in selected wetlands by raising and releasing Galerucella beetles (beetles that eat purple loosestrife). The raising, releasing, and monitoring of release sites have been done by teams of volunteers. This year volunteers are needed from June 4 to the 19 to monitor sites where beetles have been previously released, in Ashburnham, Ayer, Groton, Leominster, Lunenburg, and Pepperell. The NRWA will be collecting data to determine the impact of the beetles on loosestrife at the sites.
Free training will be offered to new and returning volunteers Wednesday, May 25, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Directions to the training site will be provided upon registration. To register, or for more information, contact Kathryn Nelson at 978-448-0299 or KathrynN@NashuaRiverWatershed.org.
