On the western coast of Sicily, which is less than 150 miles from Tunisia, sweet-and-sour flavors, as well as ingredients like pine nuts and raisins, are especially common.
2 tablespoons mayonnaise
2 tablespoons sour cream
1 tablespoon packed dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon white-wine vinegar
1 pound broccoli crowns, cut into small florets
(about 4 cups)
3 tablespoons pine nuts, toasted
2 tablespoons raisins
2 scallions, thinly sliced
3 slices bacon, crisp-cooked and crumbled
2 cups shredded red cabbage
Blend the mayonnaise, sour cream, brown sugar, and vinegar in a small bowl until smooth. Toss the pine nuts, broccoli, raisins, scallions, and bacon in a salad bowl. Drizzle the dressing and toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate up to one day to blend the flavors. Serve the salad over the cabbage. Serves four.
