Garden Club accepting grant and scholarship applications
The Garden Club of Harvard has announced that 2011 applications for education grants and scholarships are now available. Each year the Garden Club makes awards ranging from $50 to $500 to individuals or organizations involved in horticulture, landscape design, environmental education, or a related field. Anyone who is a resident of Harvard, a full-time employee of the town, or a representative of a town organization is eligible to apply.
Applications are available at the Bromfield School office, Hildreth Elementary School office, Town Hall, Public Library and at http://harvardgardenclub.org/what.html. Applications should be sent to GCH, Box 105, Harvard, MA 01451. The deadline is Monday, May 16. Recipients of grants or scholarships will be announced in June. Lions accepting applications for community service award
The Harvard Lions Club invites Bromfield seniors to apply for the Harvard Lions Club Community Service Award, a cash award in memory of Lion Oleh Dutkewych.
This award is presented to one or more seniors in recognition of their community service for the citizens of Harvard. Copies of the application are in the guidance office of the Bromfield School and are also available from Lion Terry Mead at tmead@charter.net.
Deadline for applications is May 1, 2011.
FAS scholarship applications available
Applications for the FAS Donna Sherman Scholarship for the Arts are now available on the For Art’s Sake website at www.forartssake-harvard.org/scholarship, as well as at the Bromfield guidance office. The scholarship, established in memory of Harvard resident Donna Sherman in 2005 by her friends, family and neighbors, is awarded by For Art’s Sake at graduation to a Bromfield senior who exhibits an extraordinary talent and passion for the arts. Visit the website for further eligibility requirements. Application forms are due in at the Bromfield School guidance office by April 15.
Senior project judges needed
Bromfield seniors have a graduation requirement designed to give them a sense of how important and rewarding giving back to the community can be. Seniors complete 40 hours of community service and are then required to give a presentation to a panel of community members and teachers.
The school is recruiting parents and community members to serve as reviewers of the seniors’ projects; at least 30 reviewers are needed. No specific knowledge is required, but reviewers cannot be a parent of a Bromfield senior.
Judging will take place Wednesday, May 18, from 12:30 to about 3:30 p.m. To volunteer, reply to Ellen Sachs Leicher at eslassoc61@aol.com.
Parks and Rec announces summer lessons, boat-slip lottery
The Harvard Parks and Recreation Commission announces the opening of registration for swimming, boating, and tennis lessons for the coming summer season. Registration will be available at www.harvardparkandrec.org beginning Saturday, April 9, at 8 a.m. (Note that classes fill up quickly.) The lottery for canoe racks, moorings and boat slips at Bare Hill Pond for the 2011 season is now open and will be open through Sunday, April 17. The lottery will be held Monday, April 18, at the Parks and Recreation Commission meeting; winners will be notified the following day. Payment is not required to register for the lottery but will be required for winners to secure a permit. Celebration needs bakers
The Food Committee of Celebration 2011 is in need of bakers to provide cookies, brownies, muffins, and chocolate-covered strawberries to the post-prom substance-free event to be held on May 13.
