The Bromfield boys and girls track teams kicked off the season with a victory against Narragansett last Thursday, April 7, at the McCurdy track. The Trojans defeated their opponents in almost every event.
The Bromfield boys team defeated Narragansett with a score of 122-14. The Trojans placed first in every running and field event, with many second- and third-place achievements, to nail the win.
Even at the first meet of the season, Trojans continued their impressive achievements, including a new school record for the 100-meter dash. Sophomore Roniel Foster broke the old record of 11.9 seconds by .1 second, which he could only describe as “amazing.”
Boys coach David Boisvert said, “I’m very pleased that a record has already been broken at the first meet. It just goes to show what hard work and practice can achieve.”
The boys swept several races, placing first, second, and third. In the 100-meter, Foster, junior Sam Elkind, and junior Hunter Siegrest placed in the top three, with times of 11.8 seconds, 12.7 seconds, and 13.0 seconds, respectively. Sophomores Glenn Sterenka and Samuel Beebe, and junior Erik Johnson placed first, second, and third at the 110-meter high hurdles. In addition, the Bromfield boys swept the 200-meter dash, 400-meter hurdles, 400-meter dash, and 800-meter run.
Other commendable times were made by junior Nick Kronauer, who ran the 1-mile with a time of 4 minutes 55.6 seconds, and sophomore Patrick Griffin who sprinted the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.4 seconds. Both runners placed first in their events.
In addition to the victories in the races, the Bromfield team turned in an exciting performance in the field events. For long jump, Foster, junior Job Clayburn, and Elkind swept with distances of 17 feet 11 inches, 17 feet 6 inches, and 16 feet 11 inches. Bromfield also swept the triple jump with Foster, Siegrist, and freshman Mitch Sklar taking first, second, and third place, respectively.
“Overall, the boys did extraordinarily well” said Boisvert. “We placed first in every event, and every runner on the team contributed to our victory in one way or another. We have another meet coming up very soon, and I hope we can repeat our success.”
The Bromfield girls track team ended the meet with a win of 82-54. The girls placed first in the 100-meter dash, 100-meter high hurdle, 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash, and the 800-meter, and swept in several short distance races.
