I applaud the efforts of the Municipal Buildings Committee and the leadership they are providing to our town on how to best address the use of core town buildings. They have presented one of the most comprehensive plans we have seen, one based upon a very labor intensive, collaborative process. They have listened to the various constituents, modified designs along the way, and developed what I believe is a concept that best addresses the needs of our community. This is a fine example of volunteerism at its best, and their expertise is very much appreciated.
The Council on Aging and our seniors have spoken loudly on why the Hildreth House is where they wish to remain and why it best suits their needs long term. Others have attempted to squeeze them into the old library, but all the homework done confirms that this approach is both short-sighted and irresponsible. Our seniors and those coming into this age are deserving of much better. Let’s respect their true needs and provide the facility that can accommodate them, as our neighboring communities have done. Let’s not disregard the exhaustive work that the MBC has done and the public request our seniors have voiced.
Transforming our old library into a cultural hub and meeting the needs of Town Hall are likewise well addressed in the MBC’s report. I ask readers to go to the town website and get familiar with this detailed recap. Harvard has the ability to design a town center with facilities that we can all be proud of, while creating a cultural center that ties us together. This is what community is about. We demonstrated our spirit and tenacity with our new library, our schools, and our conservation efforts, and we can do it with our town center.
Talk to the selectmen, the Capital Planning Committee, and others who are weighing in on this report. Do not allow certain town leaders to speak on your behalf without truly hearing your voice. Get educated, get involved, and be prepared to ask questions. The MBC’s phased-in approach is well balanced and representative of our input to date. Let’s continue to work with this group in enabling our future and providing an ongoing stewardship respectful of our precious town assets.
