The Bromfield varsity field hockey team defeated Maynard last Thursday at home, ending the season with a 16-1-1 record and the title Mid-Wach Divison 3 league champions.
Throughout the first half, Bromfield continuously pushed against the opposing team until the Trojans found themselves inches away from Maynard’s net. Bromfield forward Sarah Andrews passed the ball to Caroline Mazzola, who smashed the ball into the goal, giving Bromfield a 1-0 lead.
The remainder of the game went to Bromfield’s incredible defensive line, which managed to keep Maynard from scoring even once in the game. Their quick movements and complex defensive strategies allowed for quick counterattacks.
As the game ended, the Trojans ran onto the field in celebration. The teamwork and effort between the Trojans offensive and defensive line pulled them ahead of Maynard, netting them the league champion title.
Bromfield senior and team captain Eva Kenna commented, “I feel that we are a very close team and we always push one another to play our hardest. As a captain, I am overwhelmingly pleased and excited about our success this season, and I am proud to be a part of the Bromfield [varsity] field hockey team.”
Bromfield senior and team captain Liz Smetana said, “Not only are we league champions, but we have the best record in Coach Silver’s career at Bromfield (16-1-1). In order to qualify at Districts we had to have 18 points, but we made it with 33 points!”
Bromfield varsity field hockey ended its regular season and will continue to play against other teams on the district level. Smetana said, “I think that going into districts we need to keep an open mind and have fun. I know that there will be hard games, but when someone has a negative attitude, not only does it bring the player down but the entire team.”
