Littleton, the only team to have defeated the Bromfield varsity field hockey team this year, found itself humbled by the unstoppable Trojans Friday on Bromfield’s home field. Their 2-0 victory puts the Trojans’ record at 9-1-1 and brings them one win away from becoming Mid-Wach D league champions.
Throughout the first half of the game, Bromfield managed to hold Littleton back, but the quick strokes and flexibility of Littleton’s forward players had Bromfield rushing to defend.
Seven minutes into the first half, Bromfield senior Jordan Davy attempted to push Littleton’s line of defense, working her way around several Littleton players. She eventually had the ball stolen from her by a skillful Littleton player.
A disappointing offsides call that invalidated a goal by Bromfield’s Katherine Friedrich reinvigorated the Trojans, who remained tenacious throughout the rest of the game. Friedrich had another chance to score when she recaptured the ball from a short pass by Bromfield’s right midfielder, Laura Jarvis, only yards away from the Littleton goal, and flicked it in for the score. The first half ended with Bromfield ahead, 1-0.
Littleton stepped up its game during the second half, and Bromfield repeatedly fought off attempts to break through the Trojans’ defenses.
With five minutes left in the game, Caroline Mazzola carried the ball across the field, avoiding and dodging any Littleton players coming her way, and stroked the ball past Littleton’s goalie, Lillian Walker, for a score that left Bromfield with a 2-0 win as the game ended.
Coach Sue Silver commented after the game, “We played very well… our passing was so much better. We have one more game to play to become Mid-Wach D league champions.”
After the victory against Littleton, Bromfield moved into first place in the Mid-Wach D league. The Trojans must play one more game against Tyngsboro to be crowned division champs.
