The Bromfield varsity field hockey team defeated Tyngsboro last Friday afternoon on their home field. They demonstrated an excellent use of teamwork throughout the match, and their offensive strides pulled them ahead of their opponent.
Bromfield started the game with a 1-0 lead in the first half. Tyngsboro recovered and equalized the score in the second half, but Bromfield made a final attack during the last minutes of the game, and came out on top with a 2-1 win, putting their record at 1-0.
“I think Friday’s game was played extremely well,” says senior captain, Jordan Davy. “We had great communication on the forward/midfield line, as well as communication among our defense.”
Bromfield was on the offensive attack during the first 10 minutes of the game, keeping the ball in Tyngsboro’s end of the field.
Bromfield junior attacker, Caroline Mazzola, brought the ball back into Bromfield possession after a Tyngsboro attack 12 minutes into the game.
Senior Katherine Friedrich was a key player in Bromfield’s victory. With just 16 minutes left in the game, she flicked the ball into the goal, sending Bromfield fans and teammates into a frenzy.
“The Bromfield varsity field hockey team excels in speed, endurance, and skills,” says Co-captain Liz Smetana. “Yes, our team is very young, but if you give us a challenge, we will do our best to win the challenge and work together as a team to accomplish the challenge.”
During the second half, Tyngsboro pressed harder to gain control of the ball. Tyngsboro players waited for an opening in the Bromfield defense, and then struck the ball into the Bromfield goal, bringing the score to 1-1 with 15 minutes left on the clock.
With only 10 minutes remaining, Bromfield and Tyngsboro sprinted back and forth trying to take definitive control of the ball, but Bromfield was the faster team.
Bromfield’s Laura Jarvis infiltrated Tyngsboro’s defenses and scored past Tyngsboro’s goalie, Evan Decarteret, giving Bromfield a 2-1 lead with only minutes to spare.
The game ended with Bromfield as the victor, and the girls chanted and celebrated their first victory of the season.
“This is not a one-man team,” says Smetana. “In order to win a game, each individual has to pull her weight. On the sideline and in the game we are not a team without each person with a varsity jersey on. Talent wins games but teamwork and courage wins championships.”
