An informal survey conducted by police deemed the newly enacted bottle bill a success. The survey of 80 of Harvard’s 86 miles of road turned up only 17 discarded bottles and cans. Surveyors surmised that the few containers found in the woods were mostly no-deposit bottles and cans, discarded before the law went into effect.
The Central Mass. Mosquito Control District informed the Board of Selectmen June 1 about four dates in June when it planned to spray for mosquitoes. Spraying, it said, would take place between 4 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. The communication from the district said it would announce the July spray schedule at a later date.
Seventy-three students graduated from Bromfield. In her speech at the graduation ceremonies, the valedictorian said that members of her generation, “despite being popularly thought of as self-centered and little given to speaking out, are nevertheless concerned with the crucial issues facing them: the threat of nuclear war, overpopulation, and the necessity for environmental management.”

The Bromfield salutatorian told the audience gathered for graduation exercises that her class had “matured without losing the wide-eyed enthusiasm for excellence.” The valedictorian challenged her 66 classmates to effect change in the world. “You can’t change the world unless you try with all your heart and soul and mind,” she said.
