EDAT is conducting a survey
The Harvard Economic Development Analysis Team (EDAT) invites town residents to participate in a survey regarding commercial development on Ayer Road. Poetry competition announced
The Friends of the Harvard Public Library announce the 10th annual John Faulkner Whitcomb Memorial Poetry Competition.
A $500 prize will be given to a junior in high school who demonstrates a gift for poetry. The prize is shared in the case of more than one winner. Entrants must attend school in Harvard, or be a Harvard resident attending high school elsewhere.
The Friends of the Harvard Public Library established this competition in 2001 to honor the memory of Dr. Jack Whitcomb, a fan of our library, poetry, and Harvard’s young adults.
The deadline for submissions is Friday, April 30. All entries must be sent to Friends of the Harvard Public Library, P.O. Box 506, Harvard, MA 01451. A panel of judges from the Harvard community will review the submitted poems and the winner, or winners, will be announced in May.
Competition guidelines are posted on the Harvard Public Library website, www.harvardpubliclibrary.org and are available at the library’s circulation desk.
New Community Ed programs offered
Harvard Community Education is offering two new programs during April school vacation week. The first is for children who will be entering kindergarten at Hildreth Elementary School in the fall, “Gear Up for Kindergarten.” Children will be able to spend three days in “kindergarten” to get acquainted with HES and the daily routine of a kindergarten classroom. The second program is for students in grades 3, 4, and 5, “So You Want to Make A Superhero,” a two-day workshop on designing and developing an individualized superhero comic book. Scholarships available for children of military heroes
The Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund is available to help alleviate the costs of college for children of Armed Forces service members who have sacrificed life or limb in service of our country. More than $3 million has been awarded to hundreds of Freedom Alliance Scholarship recipients since 2002.
An eligible applicant must be the dependent son or daughter of a U.S. soldier, sailor, airman, Marine or National Guardsman who has been killed or permanently disabled (100 percent Veterans Administration disability rating) in an operational mission or training accident, or who is currently classified as a Prisoner of War (POW) or Missing in Action (MIA). An applicant must also be a high school senior or registered as a full-time undergraduate student and under the age of 26.

Devens has issued a notice marking the following military activities that will result in increased noise.

- Thursday, March 25: Mortar live fire, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Demolitions training, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; hand grenade live detonation, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Friday, March 26: Mortar live fire, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Demolitions training, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.; hand grenade live detonation, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Saturday, March 27: MK19 familiarization fire, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Sunday, March 28: MK19 familiarization fire, 9 a.m. to noon
- Tuesday, March 30: Demolitions training, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
