I want to acknowledge the mistakes in my recent article [“Consider This,” Harvard Press, Feb. 26] and apologize if this information was perceived to have been purposefully misleading.
First, I misinterpreted the staffing worksheet related to student pages and stand corrected in my assertion that the library had at one time used a higher percentage of student labor. They didn’t.
Second, the circulation supervisor was listed as a circulation librarian on the staffing worksheet, and given that her salary is within 4 percent of the children’s librarian, I erroneously counted her as a full-time librarian.
Finally, just as a point of clarification, the reason for sharing the state averages was purely to counter the accusation that the Finance Committee seeks to gut the library. We just seek to dial back the budget growth while we are faced with a tough financial climate and in so doing, have tried to identify tactics that could be deployed to reduce costs with minimal impact to services.
In the end, it is up to the Library Trustees to do what they think is in the best interests of the library patrons and the town as a whole.
