Bromfield’s Alpine ski racing teams closed out their regular season in convincing fashion Monday at Nashoba Valley Ski Area in Westford. Bromfield’s girls dominated the day’s tough and technical slalom race with their largest point total of the year, sealing both the race win and their second league championship in three years. The boys team fell just 3 points shy of league champ Westford Academy on the day, cementing their second-place overall standing in the league for the season.
The ladies placed all six varsity racers in the top 11 for the race, with sophomore Jackie Sampson once again leading the way in fourth place. Juniors Tory Sowizral and Tori Budd followed in fifth and sixth, and a pack of three eighth-grade girls—Sarah Rowse, Karina Edwards, and Lizzie Rooney—bagged the ninth through 11th spots. The win over all six league rivals provided the Bromfield girls with a 27–3 record for the year, three wins ahead of second-place Acton-Boxborough. The junior varsity girls also fared very well, with eighth-graders Lauren Masters, Natalie Harrah, and Jessica Williams garnering 23rd, 25th, and 26th overall; freshman Jackie Magoun took 28th, sophomore Jillian Saydah closed in 30th, and freshman Gabby McCready crossed the line 41st.
Bromfield’s boys followed last week’s 470-point win with another strong 464-point performance, and finished the regular season with a 25–5 record vs. Acton-Boxborough, Chelmsford, Lowell, Westford, Groton-Dunstable, and Newton South. For the third race in a row, sophomore Erik Johnson led Bromfield’s boys across the line with a second-place finish. Junior Tyler von Loesecke grabbed the fourth spot, and sophomore Tucker Edwards nabbed sixth. Sophomore Sam Elkind finished 12th, and Bromfield’s three seniors—captain Josh Wright, Brian Mandozzi, and “big” Ryan Williams—finished in a pack at 17th, 18th, and 20th. Boys junior varsity racers fared well also, with freshman “little” Ryan Williams pulling 30th, sophomore Patrick Ware 33rd, and junior newcomer Jon Fobert 35th. Seventh-grader Jarrod Revane achieved his best finish of the year, with 48th place, closely followed by sophomore Austin Parker in 49th. Seventh-grader Peter Donaldson, overcoming a hand injury during his run, finished 58th, and eighth-grader Sam Dyer closed out the results for Bromfield with a 60th-place finish.
Bromfield also qualified four boys and four girls to compete in the State Championship Races at Wachusett Mountain Wednesday, Feb. 24: Johnson, von Loesecke, Edwards, and Elkind will run for the boys, with senior captain Josh Wright landing a possible spot as first alternate for the league. Girls qualifying for States include Sampson, Sowizral, Budd, and Rowse.
Pacers place in all-star race
Bromfield’s top five racers on each team took on the best of their league rivals, and also the top racers from Concord-Carlisle, Lincoln-Sudbury, Lunenburg, Wayland, Bedford, and Winchester, in the combined Mass Bay West All-Star Race on Tuesday, Feb. 9. The boys team finished second behind Westford; girls were on podium in third place behind Acton-Boxborough and Concord-Carlisle. Sophomore Erik Johnson finished second for boys; Jackie Sampson led girls in fourth. The best four racers on both teams (who are the athletes who qualified for State Championship) all finished within the top 20 in a field of more than 60 racers.
