I thought that Josephine Carothers expressed well her concerns about the Supreme Court’s decision in the Citizens United case [in last week’s Press], but I wish to disagree with her.
As nicely put by Randy E. Barnett in Friday’s Wall Street Journal, the ruling “concerned the right of labor unions and domestic corporations, including nonprofits, to express their views about candidates in media such as books, films, and TV within 60 days of an election.”
Restrictions on foreign nationals and companies continue, and there is no change in the century-old ban on corporate contributions to political campaigns.
I agree with Barnett’s concept that President Obama’s treatment of the Supreme Court in his State of the Union address is no different from his treatment by Congressman Wilson of South Carolina, which we all, I am sure, found abhorrent.
