Mark Schwiegershausen, a sixth-grade student at Bromfield, won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on Dec. 23. The school-level competition, at which students provided oral answers to questions on geography, was the first round in the 22nd annual National Geographic Bee.
Schwiegershausen defeated the second-place finisher, eighth-grader Maddie Van Dorpe, by correctly answering the question, “After the United States and France, which island country generates the most power from nuclear energy?” The answer was Japan.
School winners from around the state, including Schwiegershausen, will now take a written test; top scorers from Massachusetts will be eligible to compete in the State Bee on April 9.
Earlier in December, 15 students (five each from grades six, seven, and eight) won their way into the school-level Bee during preliminary classroom competitions. Participants included sixth-graders Tiffany Khuu, Suzy Opalka, Beck Peterson, Mark Schwiegershausen, and JJ Stadler; seventh-graders Emily Cumbo, Peter Donaldson, Will Malloy, Allison Rizzo, and Connor Sloan; and eighth-graders Emily Hadorn, CJ Klem, Luke Quarles, Maddie Van Dorpe, and Eli Wood.
