Open burning season begins
Open burning season in Harvard runs from Jan. 15 to May 1. During the season residents can burn brush, cane, driftwood, and noncommercial forestry debris between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., as long as they have a permit. Permits must be obtained in person from the police station. Applicants will be asked to sign a log and will be given a pamphlet containing the permit number and open burning rules and regulations. There is currently no fee for a burning permit.
Residents need only apply for a burning permit once per season; however, townspeople still require authorization to burn on a specific day, and they can get this approval by calling the dispatcher at 978-456-8276 after 9 a.m. daily. Fire Chief Bob Mignard will determine the safety of burning conditions on any given day.

Applewild announces scholarship program
The Applewild School, a private coeducational day school in Fitchburg that serves students in kindergarten through grade 9 in central Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire, has announced the launch of the school’s Pilot Merit Scholarship Program for students of exceptional academic caliber entering the sixth grade.
The best candidates for the program will possess strong character and community involvement and will possess talent or passion in an area of special interest. Up to two grants of $10,000 each will be awarded to top applicants. Additional partial scholarships may also be available, depending on the qualifications of the candidates. Applicants who require additional financial aid are invited to apply for need-based financial aid to supplement this award. Students who do not qualify for awards will continue to be considered for admission to Applewild and may be eligible for consideration for need-based financial assistance or other scholarship opportunities.

Habitat for Humanity seeks family for home in Hudson
Habitat for Humanity North Central Massachusetts is looking for a family in need of a simple, decent home that will be built on Old Bolton Road in Hudson in 2010. Anyone interested in applying for a Habitat for Humanity home is invited to attend an information meeting Saturday, Jan. 16, at 10 a.m. or Monday, Jan. 18, at 6:30 p.m. at the Hudson Fire Station, 296 Cox St. in Hudson. (The snow date will be Saturday, Jan. 23, at 10 a.m.) Potential home applicants and all who will apply to be considered as owners must attend one of these sessions to apply. Partner/homeowners work alongside Habitat volunteers to help build a home and at completion purchase their homes at cost with zero-interest mortgages.
