Sailor, wood artist, son of Harvard woman

Mark Alexander McClellan, 52, of Rockland, Maine, died tragically on Dec. 20, 2009, resulting from an ice boating accident on Chickawaukee Lake in Rockport, Maine.
Mark was born June 6, 1957, in Ayer, and spent his childhood in Pepperell. He was a graduate of Lawrence Academy and the University of Massachusetts, where he studied wood technology. He settled in Rockland in the 1980s and worked at various shipyards in Maine. He designed and constructed furniture in his own workshop. An artist with wood, Mark worked collaboratively on commissioned projects, some of which are now in museums.
Mark married Ann E. Nuesse Sept. 27, 1997, in Georgetown, Maine. He was a devoted husband and a loving father to their two children, Amelia (Molly), 7, and Thomas, 9.
Mark and Ann shared a love of the islands of Maine, as well as travel, skiing, hiking, and sailing. An avid sailor, Mark was captain of the schooner Simplicity, designed by William Hand, and the motor vessel Sunshine, by Baltzer-Jonesport. Both vessels served primarily as charter vessels in Penobscot Bay. Mark instilled a love of boating in many who shared time on the water with him. He sailed extensively with friends and family around coastal Maine and as far south as the West Indies.
Mark was predeceased by his father, James L. McClellan Jr. He is survived by his wife, Ann, his son, Thomas, and his daughter Amelia, as well as his mother, Constance R. McClellan of Harvard; brothers James L. McClellan III of Harvard and his family; Peter H. McClellan of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico; and Andrew R. McClellan of St. Louis, Mo. and family. In addition, he is survived by his first wife, Margaret Barclay of Camden, Maine.
A memorial service was held Friday, Jan. 1, at the Congregational Church of Camden, Maine.
