With the first two of five regular season races behind them, Bromfield’s boys and girls Alpine Ski teams have both raced to second place overall. Bromfield’s girls finished last week’s giant slalom race in second place behind a very strong Acton-Boxborough squad, and duplicated that result in the first slalom race of the year on Jan. 12. Bromfield’s boys trailed only Westford in the first giant slalom race, and closed in third place behind Westford and Acton-Boxborough, which leaves them tied for second with Acton-Boxborough. Groton-Dunstable Regional High School, Lowell High School, Newton South High School, and Chelmsford High School all compete for ski racing honors with Westford, Acton-Boxborough, and Bromfield.
Sophomore Jackie Sampson has led the charge for the ladies, finishing fifth in week one and fourth this week. Junior Tory Sowizral has finished right on Jackie’s heels, sixth in giant slalom and fifth in slalom. Junior Tori Budd, who attends Littleton High School and races with Bromfield, turned in consecutive eighth-place finishes. Eighth-grader Sarah Rowse finished ninth in giant slalom and 15th in slalom, while junior captain Maggie Rooney rounded out Bromfield’s scoring with 12th- and 17th-place finishes.
For the boys, junior Tyler von Loesecke has been the top Bromfield racer in both races to date, on the podium in second place in last week’s giant slalom and finishing fifth in this week’s slalom. Sophomore Erik Johnson registered a fifth place in the opening giant slalom and 10th in slalom. Sophomore Sam Elkind, eighth place, and seniors Josh Wright, 20th place, and Ryan Williams, 21st place, rounded out Bromfield’s giant slalom points last week. Wright followed with a 12th place in Tuesday’s slalom, with senior Brian Mandozzi’s personal best 14th-place finish, also earning valuable points for Bromfield. Elkind rounded out the slalom scoring for the Trojans.
