Selectmen renew senior tax work-off program
The selectmen have renewed for another year the program that lets Harvard seniors reduce their annual tax bill by up to $750 by doing work for the town.
To qualify, an applicant must be 60 years old and have owned and resided in a Harvard home for at least a year. Ginger Quarles, director of the town’s Council on Aging, maintains a list of available positions, which include assignments at Town Hall, the library, and schools, among others. Thirteen Harvard seniors participated in the program last year. Town Administrator Tim Bragan said this week that the program has never used all of the allocated funds.
Participants are expected to work up to 93.75 hours during 2010. When fewer hours are worked, the amount deducted from the third- and fourth-quarter tax bills of a participant is calculated at the rate of $8 dollars for each hour worked. Only one household member is allowed to join the program each year. Applications for 2010 are available at Town Hall or on the town web site.
