Gov. Michael Dukakis paid a visit to Carlson Orchards, where he signed a bill to promote the apple industry in Massachusetts. The program would use marketing, research, and the establishment of grading standards to promote the industry; activities would be funded by assessments levied on the state’s apple growers and producers.
A committee that was formed to promote the building of a gazebo on the Common reported it had collected 95 signatures on a petition to have the proposal presented at Town Meeting.
During a joint meeting of the Planning Board and Long-Range Planning Advisory Committee, members of both boards agreed that the more people involved in planning the town’s future, the better.
January 1994
The State Legislature approved a bill that created the Devens Enterprise Commission.
During a ceremony at Fort Devens to mark the passage of the bill that created the DEC, Lieutenant Gov. Paul Cellucci announced that the state had scrapped plans to build an international airport at the fort.
January 2003
The Army invited residents to participate in a survey about their goals for the cleanup of Fort Devens.
Anticipating a 10 percent cut in state aid, the Finance Committee asked town departments to present three possible budgets: one level-funded, one with a 5 percent cut, and one with a 10 percent cut.
Arguing that the town had been overspending for years, one selectman said that the only override the town should support was for contracted personnel benefits, which totaled $240,000.
