Ben Watson, a local and national food activist, was the guest speaker at the Harvard Conservation Trust annual meeting on Nov. 18. Watson, an advocate of the “Slow Food” movement, spoke on “Conserving New England’s Apple Heritage and Culture.” Following the lecture, attendees tasted a variety of locally grown apples not found in chain grocery stores, including an heirloom, the Roxbury Russet, which is the oldest named apple variety in the nation, dating back to 1640.
During the business portion of the meeting outgoing president Victor Normand was presented with a bowl hand-turned from Harvard cherry wood by East Bare Hill Road resident Dave Durrant. Members thanked Normand and outgoing trustees Sue Toll and Phil Knoettner for their efforts on behalf of the Trust. Dennis Delaney was chosen as the new president, and new trustees Jim Croyle, Ted McMahon, and Jim Saalfield were voted in, each for a three-year term.
