The Bromfield crew team faced 19 teams and compared well to two of the largest last Saturday at the Tail of the Fish Regatta in Saratoga, N.Y. They brought home two gold, three silver, and two bronze medals.
Ninth-graders Caroline Hart and Olivia MacLean rowed their way to a first-place finish in the girls double, almost a minute ahead of second-place Saratoga. Senior Mike Child and sophomore Sam Ginouves repeated the accomplishment, taking first in the boys double, followed by Niskayuna, a rowing club near Schenectady, N.Y.
The pattern was set: the girls would battle host team Saratoga and the boys Niskayuna for the remainder of the day.
The novice girls four-plus (four rowers, four oars, coxswain) and the varsity girls quad (four rowers, eight oars, coxswain) both placed third in races dominated by Saratoga, whose depth made the team able to field three or more boats in several events. The boys varsity pulled to a fourth-place finish in the quad event and 10th out of 19 in the four-plus.
Bromfield ended the day with three silver medals, when the boys first- and second-varsity eight-pluses rowed to strong second-place finishes behind Niskayuna boats, and the girls novice eight-plus did equally well with a second-place behind Saratoga, but ahead of three other Saratoga boats. The girls varsity eight-plus finished a respectable seventh out of 23 entries.
This was a strong showing for a team a fraction the size of the two most prominent teams at the regatta, teams they will race again at the Head of the Fish later this month.
