Farmers’ Market announces contest
The first Get Growing Contest at the Harvard Farmers’ Market will take place Aug. 29. All entrants will be awarded a prize ribbon, and first-place winners will receive special rosettes and a mention on the Harvard Farmers’ Market website.
The market organizers encourage creativity with the submissions—flair will count as much as horticultural prowess. Entry categories include:
Flowers
- one rose stem in a vase
- a vase or bowl of roses
- one sweet pea stem in a vase
- a vase or bowl of sweet peas
- a vase or bowl of mixed garden flowers
Vegetables
- two tomatoes on a plate
- two heads of lettuces
- two varieties of fruit on a plate
- three varieties of vegetables on a plate
- the longest carrot
- the heaviest potato
- the best jar of jam
Entries by kids younger than 16
- a miniature garden on a tray
- a fruit, vegetable, or flower sculpture
- a jar or jam posy
- the best weed
- the best decorated fairy cake
Vegetable and flower entries should be presented at the special events tables next to the managers’ tent at the market by 11 a.m. Judging will be between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Winners will be announced at the market at 12:30 p.m.
HAA basketball registration open
The Harvard Athletic Association is accepting registration for all basketball programs. Participants can learn basic skills and competitive teams play against teams from other towns in the Nashoba Youth League. More information will be provided in flyers given to students during the first week of school. All boys and girls travel teams have a registration deadline of Sept. 27. Benson announces opportunity for free legal advice
Representative Jennifer Benson (D, Lunenburg) has announced that the Massachusetts Bar Association will hold free “dial-a-lawyer” hours for any resident looking for legal advice Thursday, Oct. 22, from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Residents with legal questions are invited to call 413-782-1659 during these hours. Veterans and their family members with any legal questions on benefits, family issues, employment concerns, and landlord/tenant matters can also contact association lawyers Thursday, Oct. 15, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 617-338-0610.
