The Friends of the Harvard Public Library held the first two days of its annual book sale last weekend at the old library. Many happy customers came away with stacks of new reading, and so far we’ve raised more than $6,000. The last day of the sale is Saturday, May 16, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
There are many people we wish to thank, including the dozens of people who donated thousands of books for the sale. Year after year, we are truly amazed at the volume of donations from such a small town.
We thank the selectmen for allowing us to use the old library. It is the ideal location, appreciated by volunteers and customers alike. This year’s experience showed meetings could be held in the building while book collection was ongoing. We know the Board of Selectmen is considering charging groups for using the building to offset costs. We’d like to point out that the book sale’s proceeds are returned to the people of Harvard by funding library activities that include children’s programs, performances, museum passes, and a scholarship. We hope to use the old library next year so that we can maximize our fundraising potential for these wonderful programs.
We give special thanks to our tireless volunteers, for the hundreds of hours that go into pulling off this event. They gave up their Saturday mornings to help sort books and work at the sale. The FOHPL Committee was also heavily involved in the planning and execution of the sale. Deborah Sauvé, Kathy Boisvert, Vicki Maxant, Gwen Cook, and Maureen Remeika gave their time, talent, and energy. Thanks also to Library Director Mary Wilson and her staff for their support.
