Senior Softball League
Weather permitting, the 33rd annual Harvard Senior Softball League will begin playing Sunday, April 19, from 10 a.m. to noon at the elementary school ball field. Fancy Nancy Story Time and Party
Children in grades pre-K through 5 are invited to a Fancy Nancy story time and party in the Children’s Room at the public library hosted by Harvard Girl Scout Senior Troop 30741 Tuesday, April 21, at 6:30 p.m. Children can enjoy Fancy Nancy stories by Jane O’Connor, make and eat parfaits, and do crafts, and are invited to bring their favorite doll and wear pj’s for this evening treat. Honor Bands Festival
The opening ceremony of the fourth New England Regional Sousa Honor Bands Festival will take place Thursday, April 23, at 2 p.m. in the Cronin Auditorium at Bromfield.
More than 250 students from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont will take part in the festival, which will culminate in a concert to be held Saturday, April 25, at 3 p.m. in the Stratos G. Dukakis Memorial Auditorium at the Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical High School in Fitchburg.
Bare Hill Regatta
The Bare Hill Rowing Association and the Bromfield Rowing team will host the annual Bare Hill Regatta Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the town beach. A number of local rowing teams that regularly race against Bromfield will be competing. Featured races include middle school, junior varsity, and varsity boys and girls eight- and four-person boats. The public, and their lawn chairs, are welcome. Parking will be in the high school lots, since beach parking will be limited to seniors and those with handicapped plates, as well as vehicles hauling boat trailers. Apple-Themed Exhibit at Fruitlands
Fruitlands Museum will celebrate its 95th season with the opening of the exhibit “The Nature of Apples: Art & Memory” April 25 and 26. Continuing through November 2009, the exhibit shows artists ranging from Currier & Ives to renowned Provincetown contemporary painter Karl Knaths. An enhancement to the exhibit, “Farmers Voices,” is a collection of compelling recorded oral histories by local farmers and orchard growers, collected and produced by exhibit cosponsor Freedom’s Way Heritage Association. Fruitlands Museum is open weekdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; weekends and holidays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Geothermal Heating and Cooling Discussion
The Harvard Energy Advisory Committee and Harvard Local will sponsor a talk on geothermal heat pumps, Tuesday, April 28, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in Volunteers Hall at the public library. Martin Orio of Water Energy Distributors will discuss the advantages of using geothermal ground source heat pumps, and homeowners Rene Roy of Harvard and Val Prest from Groton will share their experience with geothermal heating systems in their homes. Organ and Brass Concert
Concerts at the Common will present organ and brass music Sunday, May 3, at 4 p.m. at the Harvard Unitarian Universalist Church. Performing on the organ will be Paul Cienniwa, who has performed in France, New York, Chicago, and Boston. In addition to leading Newport Baroque, he is director of Sine Nomine choral ensemble and is music director at First Church of Boston, where he can be heard weekly on WERS (88.9 FM) Boston. Another guest performer will be Jim Phelan, an active horn soloist and chamber music performer both in the United States and abroad, who plays in the Massachusetts Symphony and Concord Orchestra. Phelan has invited four accomplished brass players to join him for this occasion. Tickets are $18 and can be purchased at the door or by calling 978-779-2876. Free refreshments will be available.
Family Movie Night
The public library will host a family movie night Friday, May 1, at 6:30 p.m., when the movie will be The Tale of Despereaux (G), for all ages. Popcorn and water will be served. Pre-registration is requested to ensure a sufficient supply of popcorn for people to buy.
WBN May Luncheon
The Women’s Business Network will hold its May luncheon Wednesday, May 6, at noon at the Healing Garden. Members should bring their own lunch and are invited to bring a friend, whether she’s in business or not. African Violet Show
The Bay State African Violet Society will present a judged show on the African violet at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive in Boylston, April 18 and 19 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The show will feature many varieties of African violets, including variegated leaf forms, miniatures, standards, and more. Members of the society will offer guided tours of the show, as well as lectures and demonstrations on African violet care. The show is included with regular admission. Members are admitted free. Admission for nonmembers is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors, and $5 for youth. Children under age 6 are admitted free.
