Jack Waterhouse, an eighth-grade student at Bromfield, won the school-level competition of the National Geography Bee for the second consecutive year on Monday, Jan. 26. The school-level bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the second round in the 21st annual National Geography Bee, sponsored by the National Geographic Society.
Waterhouse defeated the second-place finisher, seventh-grader Ryan Kennedy, when he answered the following question:
“The Yamana are a people indigenous to Tierra del Fuego, an island at the southernmost point in South America that is divided between Argentina and what country to the west?” Waterhouse correctly answered, Chile.
He now advances to the state regional round of competition, where he will take a written test. The top scorers in the state will compete in the Massachusetts Bee on April 3.
The first round of competition consisted of class competitions where 15 finalists (five each from grades six, seven, and eight) won their way into the school finals. The sixth-grade winners of that round of competition were Will Malloy, Charles Mednieks, Chris Melby, Jarrod Revane, Kirsten Sundeen. Grade seven winners were Ali Hanlon, Lena Karotkin, Ryan Kennedy, Sabine Nescke, and Lizzie Rooney. The eighth grade was represented by Owen Alderson, John Cooper, Charles Friedrich, Haley Newsham, and Jack Waterhouse.
