In appreciation of emergency workers

January 9, 2009

Being without power for six days after the recent ice storm reminded me how easy it is to take things for granted, such as being able to throw a switch and get light or turn on a faucet and get water. In the same way, it’s easy to take people for granted, and we should be careful not to do that, especially all the people who did so much for our town during the storm. The Department of Public Works workers were out during the worst of the storm, battling to keep the roads clear of trees and telephone poles. The police, members of the Fire Department, the EMTs, and especially the police dispatchers were all hard at work to keep us all safe. And the utility crews who worked long hours under very difficult circumstances, including those who came from far away during the holiday season to help us, deserve special recognition. We owe all of these people a real debt of gratitude. Thank you.
