The Bromfield boys soccer team finished off its remaining division games of the season with two resounding wins against Littleton and Gardner last week.
The midweek match against the Tigers of Littleton was a special one for the Bromfield seniors. For Caleb Frost, Scott Nussdorfer, Greg Wenger, Jon Alexander, Jeff Messina, Kevin Molinaro, Ryan Parker, Connor Davy, and Sam Peisch, it was their last regular-season home game in high school. Bromfield Coach Tom Hill led a brief ceremony for all the senior players, as each player presented his parents with a bouquet of flowers.
Following the brief senior day festivities, the Trojans immediately set to work to make the game a memorable one. After 15 minutes of virtually unchallenged possession by the Trojans, senior co-captain Nussdorfer unselfishly poked a pass back to a center midfielder that was hit into the low corner to start the impending scoring barrage. Nussdorfer added one of his own later to make it 2–0. After Bromfield took a 3–0 lead minutes later, Littleton managed to score on its only true attempt at goal. A shot from the wing was initially blocked by league-leading goalkeeper Frost, but a Tiger forward nailed in the rebound from close range to make it 3–1.
The Trojans went into the second half with a vengeance. Within 10 minutes, goals by juniors Cody Osgood, Dylan Gatto, Matt Jones, and Brian Mandozzi and seniors Messina and Alexander quickly put the game far out of reach. With total domination of the ball in all parts of the field, the Trojans rolled to an 11–1 win.
The following day Bromfield traveled to Gardner to play its final league game. Quick passing in the middle of the field by Nussdorfer and senior co-captain Wenger led to early offensive opportunities. However, it was Osgood who opened up the scoring for the men in blue, seizing on a missed pass on the left side of the Gardner defense. Osgood placed a lob into the corner to give the Trojans all they would need for the win. Wenger struck twice in the next few minutes with two separate rips into the corner to increase Bromfield’s lead to 3–0. Osgood finished another chance on the next possession to round out the score for the first nine minutes at 4–0.
In the second half, Coach Hill put players in different positions to simulate possible playoff situations. The substitutes for the men in blue controlled the game through quick one-and-two-touch passing in the midfield. The Trojans benefited from strong play in the middle from Mandozzi and junior Josh Wright. The defense had another strong outing, allowing only two major shots on goal throughout the match.
“In both games we had a lot of strong, quick passing,” said Nussdorfer. “That helped our team play and gave us quality goals.”
Bromfield will be the first seed going into the playoffs with a 16–0–1 record.
