Mary Helan Turner of Littleton County Road exhibited flowers and vegetables from her gardens at the 2008 Bolton Fair and received “Best of Show” rosettes in three categories: Horticulture (a 4-by-4-foot display of flowers and greens), Horticulture Container (a window box), and Vegetable (a 19.5-pound squash in a shape that can’t be mentioned in a family newspaper).
She attributes the first two awards to all the horticultural tips and flower arranging and design elements she learned as a member of the Garden Club of Harvard. She sends out the vegetable award as a loving tribute to her late father, a Harvard resident, Martin Vesenka, who always encouraged her to grow at least one weird vegetable each year.
